The film clue game
Guess the movie in as few clues as you can
A film is picked from 151 titles and described to you one clue at a time. Name it from the year alone and you take the full thousand points. Take all five clues and you are scraping two hundred.
How to play
- 1
Round one opens with a single clue: the year the film was released.
- 2
Type your answer into the guess box. The suggestions cover every film in the game, so the list never gives the answer away.
- 3
Guess wrong and the next clue appears instead of the round ending. Genre, then director, then the lead actor.
- 4
The fifth clue is a written hint that describes the film without naming it.
- 5
Five rounds make a session. At the end you get a score, a Movie IQ out of 100 and a spoiler-free result card to share.
Tips for a higher score
Commit early
The gap between clue one and clue two is 200 points. If a year plus a hunch feels right, back it – a wrong guess only costs you the clue you were about to take anyway.
Read the genre pairing
The second clue shows two genres in order of prominence. "Sci-Fi / Drama" points somewhere very different from "Sci-Fi / Action".
Directors are the giveaway
By clue three you have a director and a year. For most well-known filmographies that is only one or two candidates.
Difficulty pays
Sessions ramp from easy to hard, and the harder rounds are worth up to 1.3x. The end of a session is where a good run is made.

Questions
- How many clues do you get?
- Five. The release year first, then the genre, the director, the lead actor and finally a written hint. You can guess at any point, and a wrong guess simply reveals the next clue.
- How is the score worked out?
- Naming the film on the first clue is worth 1,000 points. After that each clue drops the round to 800, 600, 400 and 200. Harder films are worth more on top.
- Does spelling have to be exact?
- No. Capitals, punctuation, accents and a leading "The" are all ignored, and a typo or two is forgiven. There is also an autocomplete list as you type.
- Is it free?
- Yes, and there is no account to create. Your scores and streak are saved on the device you play on.
